"Have been working with Caroola for over 6 months now and the team led by Phil has been nothing but helpful - from helping setup the company to advising on random questions to guidance on various commercial and accountancy areas. Thanks Phil and others for making this easier than i thought it might be."

"My ltd company has been with Caroola (previously Clearsky) for over 10 years now and I am very pleased with the service provided. They never missed a deadline and always promptly take action. Recently, my accounts were taken over by James Brown who not only responded within minutes to my email but offered a call the next day to run through in a friendly and professional manner. I highly recommend James and Caroola."

"I've been a customer of Caroola for over 6 years now and have had great service for both my companies. Looking forward to many more years of top accountancy services with Caroola, and especially with Phil and Sarah. Many thanks!"

How does it work?

It's an easy, three-step process.

Self Assessment deadlines and fines

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

The deadline for filing your Self Assessment tax return is January 31st 2026. That may seem far away now, but why put off to tomorrow what you can do today? Starting the process early means you can get your tax return filed and out of the way for ultimate peace of mind. Plus, no last minute stress or late-filing penalties!

How much will I be fined for late filing?

You’re automatically hit with a £100 fine from HMRC if your tax return is up to 3 months late. Then, if you file after this period the fine continues to increase, and you’ll be charged 7% interest on late payments. Here's a breakdown of the fines you’re facing:

  • Over 3 months late: £10 per day, up to a maximum of £900
  • Over 6 months late: Another £300 fine or an additional 5% of tax owed - whichever is higher – totalling £1300
  • Over 12 months late: Another £300 fine or an additional 5% of tax owed - whichever is higher – totalling £1600.

Do I need to file a Self Assessment?

Yes, anyone who is self-employed and earns over £1,000 in the same tax year has to file a Self Assessment. It’s important to file on time and be accurate in your submission because this is how HMRC calculates and collects the income tax you owe.

If I’m filing late, what do I need to provide?

Delaying your filing duties now means there's an increased chance of filing late as the deadline creeps in. If that happens, you’ll need to share a breakdown of your income for the year, any supporting documentation, proof of ID and address. Going forward, it’s crucial to keep on top of your bank statements and receipts year-round to make filing easy, quick and accurate.

What happens if I've been paying too much tax?

This can happen – and if it does, you may be due a tax refund. Our tax specialists will help you to spot this and make HMRC aware.
