MTD FOR INCOME TAX

WHAT IS MAKING TAX DIGITAL?
The biggest change to UK tax filing in 30 years
MTD for Income Tax replaces the annual Self Assessment return with a new system of quarterly digital submissions — and it affects millions of self-employed people and landlords.
Keep Digital Records
You'll need to record all income and expenses digitally using HMRC-approved software. Paper records and spreadsheets alone will no longer be sufficient.
File Quarterly Updates
Instead of one annual return, you'll submit income and expenses to HMRC four times a year. Each quarterly update must be filed within one month of the quarter end.
Submit a Final Declaration
At the end of each tax year you'll submit a Final Declaration to confirm your income figures and make any adjustments — this replaces the traditional Self Assessment return for MTD clients.
MTD applies to self-employed people and landlords
If your gross income from self-employment and/or property meets the threshold below, MTD for Income Tax will apply to you from the relevant date.
April 2026: £50,000+
Gross income from self-employment and/or property per tax year. Mandatory now.
April 2027: £30,000+
Gross income from self-employment and/or property per tax year.
April 2028: £20,000+
Gross income from self-employment and/or property per tax year.

Why Caroola?
The value of having an expert in your corner.
MTD isn’t just about software. Having a qualified accountant means you’re protected, supported, and compliant — even when things get complicated.
Maximise your tax efficiency
A dedicated accountant doesn't just file your returns — they proactively identify allowances, reliefs and opportunities to reduce your tax bill legally and legitimately.
Avoid costly penalties
Under MTD, HMRC operates a points-based penalty system. Miss a quarterly update and you accumulate points — reach four and you receive a £200 fine, plus additional penalties for further misses.
Protection if HMRC queries your return
If HMRC opens an enquiry into your finances, having a qualified accountant means you have a professional advocate — someone who understands the rules and can respond on your behalf.
A dedicated point of contact
Your own UK-qualified accountant who knows your business, answers your questions, and is always on hand — not a call centre or automated system.

How Much Does a Professional Accountant Cost?
The cost of an accountant will typically depend on the level of support needed.
For instance, VAT or Self Assessment support is a common add-on which can increase the price of services. At the same time, you don’t want to be paying for an accountancy package that over services and overcharges your company. An accountant should provide noticeable value in the form of targeted support, communication, and legal compliance.
At Caroola, we offer fixed monthly pricing so it’s easy to plan ahead. We will always be transparent about the fees and costs associated with our accountancy services, so you know exactly what you’re paying for. No hidden fees. Just maximised value for money.

FAQs
- When is MTD mandatory?
MTD for Income Tax applies from April 2026 for those with gross income over £50,000, from April 2027 for those over £30,000, and from April 2028 for those over £20,000. Income must be from self-employment and/or property — employment income, pensions and dividends don’t count towards the threshold.
- Who needs to file quarterly updates?
Any self-employed individual or landlord whose gross income from self-employment and/or property meets the relevant threshold for their mandation date. Partnerships, trustees and personal representatives are currently exempt from the initial phase.
- What records must I keep for MTD?
You must keep digital records of all business income and expenses using HMRC-recognised software. This includes invoices, receipts, bank transactions and any other financial records. These must be linked to your submission software — copy and paste between systems does not comply.
- What is a Final Declaration? The Final Declaration is the end-of-year submission that replaces the Self Assessment tax return for MTD clients. It confirms your total income and any adjustments for the tax year. It must be submitted by 31 January following the tax year — the same deadline as the current Self Assessment return.
- What happens if I miss a quarterly update?
HMRC operates a points-based penalty system for MTD. Each missed quarterly update earns one penalty point. When you reach four points, a £200 fine is issued — with further penalties for each additional missed submission. Points are reset after a period of compliance.
- Can Caroola handle MTD for me if I'm already a client?
Yes. If you’re already a Caroola Accountancy client, speak to your accountant about adding an MTD package to your current service. Our team will ensure a smooth transition and keep your records compliant from day one.
